We all know that Art is
not truth. Art is a lie that makes us realize the truth, at least the truth
that is given to us to understand.
- Pablo Ruiz Picasso
(1881-1973)
Pablo Ruiz
Picasso is one the most influential Spanish painters of the 20th century.
I invite
you to explore his life, his works, and most importantly, how the political
environment in Spain and Europe in the late 1930’s is reflected in his
master pieces.
It is important
that you keep a journal (roughly 75% in Spanish) of your findings. Your
entries should address the following points:
| Who was Picasso? What was his upbringing like? How was his lifestyle? What were his struggles? What artists did he look up to? |
| What political movement was happening in Spain in the 1930’s? What was Picasso’s position? Make inferences by observing his works. |

| In Spanish, describe each piece of work with as much detail as to give a blind person an accurate mental picture of what each painting looks like. Include the painting’s name and year. |
| Out of all of Picasso’s works
that you have observed, select an interesting/intriguing painting. In an
8x11 white paper, sketch a replica of the painting in pencil. Choose one
of the following:
Write up a five-line poem that reflects your perception of the painting. Make up a short story that can be illustrated by the painting. Make up a journal entry from Picasso’s view points. How was he feeling? What was on his mind? |
| Bring your penciled sketch to class. Be ready to paint it. |
| Prepare a five-minute presentation of your journal to small groups in class. |
