There is no doubt that Americans live in a society where women are expected  to behave one way and men the other.  But, how do we learn to act according  to our given gender?

Why is it that most guys like playing football, drinking beer, and cars?      
Why do women tend to enjoy make-up, shopping, and jewelry?

Parents, family and peers play a huge part in the discovery, but the media tends to be an even more influential means of learning role expectations.  In  particular, if you were to really pay attention during a television commercial you would notice that there are tons of stereotypes being represented.  Even children's advertisements show what is considered acceptable for boys and what is acceptable for girls.
